The Mechanical Licensing Collective just introduced something it's never had before: a blackbox period.
Starting in early 2027, the MLC will begin reviewing unclaimed mechanical royalties going back to January 2021. If they can't match a song to its rightful owner, that money doesn't sit and wait. It gets redistributed to other copyright holders based on market share.
Translation: if your catalog isn't properly registered, somebody else could get paid off your work.
This is exactly what BeatStars Publishing exists for. Registration, collection, and making sure your name is attached to your royalties before a deadline like this one ever becomes a problem.
Go check your catalog. Make sure every song you own is claimed, not just uploaded.
