A Tribute To Prodigy: 10 Inspired Beats We Love (RIP)

This week has been tough…We lost one of my all time favorite emcees…Prodigy.

As an early 80’s baby, I was raised on the late 80’s/early 90’s hip-hop sound, specifically the boom bap sound. I remember waiting for Sam Goody to open every Tuesday so I could cop a new cassette. Whether it was Mobb Deep, Nas, Big L, Wu-Tang Clan, Ram Squad, or Dr. Dre, I was there.

I truly miss those days, as music has shifted drastically and streaming has taken over all of our lives. I won’t bore you with the “back in my day” stories, as this post is about Bandana P, P or as most know him, Prodigy of Mobb Deep.

I consider Mobb Deep one of the greatest hip-hop duos of all time, and I think a lot of people would agree. While both Prodigy and Havoc both offered different (but dope) styles, Prodigy always stuck out to me the most. He had a knack for making words rhyme that didn’t, annunciating and delivering things that no other emcee could, and all with that NY slang and attitude.

Prodigy talked about a lot of stuff that other emcees didn’t, and he did it in a way that made you pay attention. His beat selection was superb…and with Havoc and Alchemist around, I’m sure it made the job of beat selection easier.

I could go on for days about Prodigy, but I’ll sum it up with a Thank You.

Thank you Prodigy. Thank you for everything you have done for hip-hop, thank you for making me a fan of this culture and providing me with a wide variety of incredible songs, lyrics, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Rest in peace, P ??
